August 26, 2025. It’s National Dog Day, and Kate the Mate deserves to be celebrated!

For the past nine years, our precious Winston-Salem (NC) AARF Rescue has served honorably as a Mate on “Slow Dance.” For six of those nine years, she celebrated her July 8th birthday while cruising. She has weathered storms, rough waters, heat, and pesky biting flies while CruisingTheICW. She takes it all in stride. Kate’s mother was a Brittany Spaniel, and her father a Boykin Spaniel. She is as sweet as she is beautiful and loves spending time with her crew, no matter where we are cruising or what we are doing. She knows who gives out treats in every port we have visited. Year after year, she takes us right back to the treat givers. This past July 8, she turned twelve years old.

Happy NATIONAL DOG DAY, Kate. You make our days complete.

Marina Life: Historic Beaufort (NC) Town Docks

Sunday, September 15, 2024. There’s something about the sunsets and evenings at Beaufort Town Docks Marina that adds to the pleasure of staying here. Yes, we always see beautiful boats and have met some wonderful people here, and what I also love is the marina is perfect for catching sunsets and evening lights.

If we lived in Beaufort, we would be among those calling for the town to keep the Beaufort Town Docks a PUBLIC MARINA. In the not too distant future, the current lease will be up on the town docks and the town will have to make a decision on the future of the marina. Whatever that decision may be, KEEP THE DOCKS PUBLIC, PLEASE.

The current management of the town docks operates to the benefit of transient boaters, the town, and its citizens, the way marinas used to be operated. Sadly, today an increasing number of marinas are focused on enriching one person or development corporation. It should never be forgotten that properly managed town docks support local businesses, business development, jobs, and tax revenues in a way non-boaters may not understand.

Enjoy a glimpse of marina life at Beaufort (NC) Town Docks.
